Where: The Low Countries

The historic "Netherlands" I cover go well beyond the modern country bearing a similar name. Indeed, it also include lands and cities now in Belgium, Luxembourg, and parts of northern France and northwest Germany.

Netherlands is Situated at the northwest corner of Europe surrounding the broad and multi-branching Rhine delta.

In the historical period I cover, the Netherlands were covered in vast marshes and moors and dotted with great cities, thriving market towns, and a myriad of smaller villages and manorial holdings. It was – and remains to this day – one of the most densely populated regions in Europe.
