π€You may have seen your history-minded friends getting excited for the US-release of the movie Fireband (which is out now in the US). Here’s why.
π¬ The film, starring Alicia Vikander and Jude Law, delves into the intriguing life of Katherine Parr (1512-1548), the sixth wife of Henry VIII (1491-1547). This historical drama promises a gripping portrayal of her role in the final years of Henry’s turbulent court.

βͺ Katherine Parr was known for her strong Protestant beliefs and reformist ideas, which she boldly advocated despite the danger. Her 1545 work, Prayers or Meditations, became widely popular, showcasing her religious convictions and her influence on Protestant thought in England.
πIn his role as Henry VIII, Jude Law looks to show us a Henry who is every bit the old lech – creepy, power-mad, and chaotically suspicious. This is no stately figure, and is a portrayal I’m very excited about.
π Firebrand is adapted from Elizabeth Fremantle’s 2013 novel Queen’s Gambit, which charts Katherine Parr’s experience navigating the perilous landscape of court, her religious convictions, and her amorous feelings for Thomas Seymour (whom she would marry after Henry’s death).
π₯ The film promises a visually stunning and emotionally intense exploration of Tudor history, with a focus on Katherine Parr’s courage and fortitude. It aims to highlight her as not just a survivor, but a pivotal figure in the Protestant Reformation.
π Firebrand is out in US theaters now, June 2024, on a limited release.
